As we age, levels of inflammation in our blood and tissues rise and this inflammation has negative effects on our immune system. As a result we become susceptible to infections, especially respiratory infections such as pneumonia. In this lecture we will discuss how the immune system changes with age, how inflammation affects immunity, why getting pneumonia in mid- to late- life can have long-term consequences and perhaps most importantly, what we can do to keep our immune systems working into old age. Dr. Bowdish holds the Canada Research Chair in Aging & Immunity at McMaster.
