Hamilton, ON L8R
WHAT: Purses for Margaret Project was developed to help homeless women in Hamilton by providing them with gently used purses filled with hygiene items.
WHY: Homeless women are a largely forgotten group and services are few and far between for them. Many live precarious lives and, because they’re women, are at higher risk to being assaulted. Mary’s Place, a 25-bed shelter for homeless women is full every night and are forced to turn away around 160 women every month. Women often arrive with only the clothes on their backs and can’t afford to buy hygiene items. Tampons and pads can cost $10 a box so they often have to decide between buying those or food.
HOW TO HELP: Fill your gently used purses with sanitary pads, tampons, tissues, wet wipes, toothbrushes, travel-size toothpaste, shampoo (travel size), lip balm, combs, deodorant, sugar-free snacks, bus tickets, plastic poncho and winter items like, socks, gloves and hats.
WHERE: Deliver them to Mary’s Place at 20 Pearl Street North - Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. This is an ongoing project as the need is not going away.
WHO: The project is named in memory of Margaret Jacobson who lived on the streets of Hamilton for more than 10 years. She died too young and may well be alive today if adequate services had been in place.
