The Useful Knowledge Society Presents: Getting Ready for Intensification

Intensification is a hot topic in Hamilton at the moment, but there are still many unanswered questions. What will intensification targets mean to the look and feel of our neighbourhoods? How do we address the dislocation that gentrification might mean for some of our neighbours?

Ontario’s Growth Plan will see Hamilton’s population increase in excess of 250,000 people over the next 35 years. To accommodate this, the City of Hamilton is planning for 20% of future residential intensification in downtown Hamilton, 40% within identified nodes ...and corridors throughout the city, and 40% within existing neighbourhoods.

What form will this development take?

Is there a way we might encourage housing and offer a way to share the economies of development beyond the existing development community?

Is there a way to offer a greater mix of housing choices, close the affordability gap and stabilize neighbourhoods during a time of growth and redevelopment?

Professor Richard Harris of McMaster will offer an historic overview of housing development along with a profile of Hamilton’s neighbourhoods. John van Nostrand, architect and planner, will invite the community to consider the possible impacts and opportunities of growth and intensification. His presentation aims to inspire us to consider alternative forms of development, and what they might accomplish.

Jason Thorne, General Manager of Planning and Economic Development for the City of Hamilton will also be on hand to answer questions on how citizens might be involved in neighbourhood development planning, and financial tools and incentives the city might employ to ensure existing landowners and local builders, as well as commercial developers benefit from the next 25 years of growth.

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Presentations begin at 7 pm.

There will be a cash bar, and donations to cover the cost of the venue and audio visual equipment will be gratefully accepted.
